An Immersive Summer Reading Plan
Here are the books I am planning on reading this summer
Summer has officially arrived here in our house which means much more time outdoors, swimming, adventures with the family, and just overall lighter reading. Summer is a time when I usually lighten my reading load and my goals switch from learning to wanting stories and immersion.
This week I wanted to take a short break from our series on going from being a consumer of books to thinking deeply to share what my reading plans are for the summer. Reading and thinking deeply are important parts of being a lifelong learner but we also need a breadth of experiences, adventures, and great characters. The series about going from consuming to thinking deeply makes up an important portion of my reading life but in order to stay sharp mentally, we need periods or seasons of lighter reading and pleasure reads.
I am going to more of a seasonal reading life where I have more focused and cognitively stimulating seasons and lighter seasons. This summer is about immersion in stories and characters for me.
Without drawing this out any further, here are the books I am planning to read this summer:
The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas
This is a massive book (1,243 pages in the translation I am reading) and one that has been on my TBR list for many years. The story is a story of revenge as the main character Edmund Dantes is wrongly imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. I am about 275 pages in as of this writing and it is so good.
The Godfather - Mario Puzo
I wrote earlier this year about my ongoing Great American Read List challenge as I make my way through this list. This is a book that has been on my shelf for many years and I am excited to enter into the Family.
A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles
This book is newer on my list but I have heard so many good things about this one. I have never read any Towles and I hear that this is the place to start with his books.
I may also try to fit in a Stephen King book as I have been working my way through his cannon or Recursion by Blake Crouch as I enjoyed his Wayward Pines trilogy.
I would love to hear your summer reading plans. Leave a comment below.

I am just getting started on the Wayward Pines series. I love finding a good series, and I’ve heard this is a great one.
A Gentleman in Moscow is really top-notch literature. Fascinating premise (house arrest at the Metropol). Masterful. I love how increasingly vast he makes the hotel seem, I appreciate the count’s skill as a connoisseur, the character development is delightful, the varying levels of conflict… I’ve read the book twice so far.
